The SRC operates under the guidance of the Student Council Coordinator.
The functions are:
- To form links between students and the staff.
- To serve as a student forum, with an advisory role, in which suggestions that may be of benefit, can be presented by students or staff, discussed, and, if appropriate, passed onto the Principal for consideration.
- To allow all students in the school, through their Councillors, the opportunity to have their opinions voiced.
- To give the Councillors the opportunity to learn and practice leadership skills.
The Student Representative Council (SRC) is a group which allows all students to have an active voice within the school. Mount Austin High School's SRC membership is from different year levels, cultures, backgrounds and talents. Voting and elections are held during Term 4 for Year 8 - College 2. Year 7 students are elected into the Student Representative Council in the following year.
Members of the Senior Student Representative Council—School Captains, President, Secretary and Treasurer—are required to compose and deliver a speech to staff, students and community members as well as sit an interview and write a letter. Once all this has been completed, the entire student body and staff vote to elect their student leaders.
The Student Representative Council is involved in fundraising events for students and infrastructure within the school, as well as broader community work. The student body is regularly encouraged to participate in community events such as 'Plant-a-Tree Day', 'Clean Up Australia Day' and other charity fundraising for the 'Cancer Council' and 'Funky Hair Friday' which supports Children with Leukaemia.
More importantly, the SRC participates in shared discussions on school issues such as school uniform, teaching and learning, school facilities and student well-being.
As a member of the Student Representative Council you will be given opportunities to develop skills in leadership—be a voice for your year group—, communication, team work, public speaking, but most importantly, you will build confidence.
If you think you would be interested in participating or being a part of the Student Representative Council and want to be a voice for your year group then contact the Student Representative Coordinator today.
